“Pinochet didn’t kill enough people.”
– Jair Bolsonaro
Why aren’t we talking about Jair Bolsonaro?
“Jair Bolsonaro, a favorite in the Brazilian presidential race, said his country owed blacks no debt because of slavery and pledged to cut back affirmative action policies.
“What debt of slavery? I never enslaved anyone in my life,” the former Army captain said in an interview on TV Cultura late on Monday. “Look, if you really look at history, the Portuguese didn’t even step foot in Africa. The blacks themselves turned over the slaves.”
Bolsonaro refuses to apologize for slavery. He has gone beyond Trump in calling Haiti a “shithole country” and has lamented that “the scum of the world” is immigrating to Brazil.
“As a member of the conservative Social Christian Party, part of the influential evangelical caucus in Congress, he expresses alarm, for instance, about the refugees coming from Syria and other countries, a relatively small number. He argues that “the scum of the world is arriving in Brazil, as if we didn’t have enough problems to resolve.”
In the interview, Mr. Bolsonaro reserved special ire for Haiti and Haitian immigrants to Brazil, describing with revulsion the poverty and sanitary conditions he witnessed on a trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, where Brazil has maintained a peacekeeping force.
“I saw women there offering sex without, excuse me for saying, any hygiene whatsoever,” said Mr. Bolsonaro, also contending that Haitian immigrants to Brazil were bringing diseases to the country. …”
Bolsonaro is calling for rightwing death squads to hunt down criminals:
“SAO PAULO (AP) — A leading candidate in Brazil’s presidential election said police should be given license to kill criminals and those who do should receive medals not face prosecution.
Hard-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro said in an interview Tuesday night that he would “leave good people out of range of the shooting” and go at criminals full steam.
“This kind of people (criminals), you cannot treat them as if they were normal human beings, ok? We can’t let policemen keep dying at the hands of those guys,” Bolsonaro said on TV Globo’s main nightly news program. “”If he kills 10, 15 or 20 with 10 or 30 bullets each, he needs to get a medal and not be prosecuted.” …”
Bolsonaro wants to arm Brazilians to kill criminals:
“Bolsonaro, who represents Rio de Janeiro in Brazil’s House of Representatives, has been steadily making racist, homophobic, and xenophobic claims since he entered politics in 1988. “This idea of ‘oh poor little black person, oh poor little poor person, oh poor little woman, oh poor little indigenous person, everybody’s a poor little something!’” he told Vice News. “I don’t try and please everybody.” Yet he’s pleasing some. He’s a “popular phenomenon” in Brazilian politics, and has already been compared to Trump a handful of times. …
For Bolsonaro, a return to law and order means changing human rights policy in Brazil, because “we can’t treat criminals as victims.” “You fight violence with violence,” he says. “If the criminal is carrying a 0.380 pistol, you must have a rifle; if he has a rifle you have to have a bazooka or a war tank. It’s not with peace and love. Nobody can stand political correctness anymore.”
Bolsonaro has openly embraced sexism and homophobia:
“He once told a lawmaker for the Workers’ Party (PT) that she was “so ugly that she doesn’t even deserve to be raped.” He also likes to attack homosexuals, saying he’d rather have a dead son than a gay son.”
This hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves.
Brazil has long been cited as an example of Whites going quietly into the night, but the crime, corruption and economic decline seems to be reaching an unexpected boiling point. Bolsonaro is saying things that makes Donald Trump look like a moderate by comparison and he could be Brazil’s next president.
