“Have men considered whither all this is tending, and what it certainly enough betokens? Cut every human relation which has anywhere grown uneasy sheer asunder; reduce whatsoever was compulsory to voluntary, whatsoever was permanent among us to the condition of nomadic:—in other words, loosen by assiduous wedges in every joint, the whole fabric of social existence, stone from stone: till at last, all now being loose enough, it can, as we already see in most countries, be overset by sudden outburst of revolutionary rage; and, lying as mere mountains of anarchic rubbish, solicit you to sing Fraternity, &c., over it, and to rejoice in the new remarkable era of human progress we have arrived at.”
– Thomas Carlyle, Latter Day Pamphlets, 1850
Catching up on the news … I see that Glenn Beck has admitted on his cable television show that America is dead and that he has given up, lost faith in the media and government, and has accepted our inevitable slide into a Brazil Norte dystopia.
I can’t summarize Beck’s latest bipolar meltdown any better than this:
“In a bizarre theatrical performance Beck dropped to his knees on the studio floor with a Federal flag, pretending that it was a dying person who was attempting to prevent from bleeding to death …
This comes from a man who not long ago went to the Lincoln temple in Washington, DC and praised Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr in front a huge crowd of nearly all-White conservatives. Beck, the supposed Right-winger, essentially asks the same question that the Leftist National Public Radio asks: What would Lincoln do? He also recently attacked the growing movement of secessionists who have had enough from the Federal Government. The best advice that Beck can offer his audience is to ‘surrender.’ Meanwhile, polls show a quarter of Republicans across the US and half of Georgia Republicans favour secession from a government in which Beck and millions of others have lost faith.
Beck also refuses to acknowledge the fact that universalism, demographic replacement, democracy and equality have destroyed the institutions he mentions. Southerners know all too well the destructive power of these US values; cities across the South have been wrecked by them. Southern nationalists have also predicted all of this going back to the early nineteenth century. …”
What’s the problem?
Abraham Lincoln succeeded in “saving the Union.” Among other things, MLK’s Dream has come true in Detroit, Birmingham, and New Orleans in 2013, where in recent years black voters have elected mayors of such fine outstanding character as Kwame Kilpatrick, Ray Nagin, and Larry Langford.
In a historic milestone for “civil rights,” America has elected and reelected “our first black president,” who has succeeded in adding $5 trillion dollars to our national debt and sending stock prices soaring on Wall Street for the 1%. Last time I checked, “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people” still exists in Rahm Emanuel’s Chicago-stan and Jerry Brown’s Beautifully Medieval California.
Isn’t the effective result of basing our entire society on fidelity to America’s cherished liberal abstractions – freedom, equality, democracy, tolerance, human rights, individualism, civil rights, the free market – not a glorious “Shining City Upon A Hill” and a victory for conservatism which the entire world should desire to emulate?
Why is it time to surrender? The only thing that has happened here is that Americanism has finally vanquished all its counterbalancing rivals and has been taken to its logical conclusion which is national disintegration.
