Sen. Josh Hawley Is Trying To Win Us Over

Sen. Josh Hawley has been making some big moves lately.

Yes, Josh Hawley is only one senator in a Republican caucus that is full of a bunch of elderly throwbacks to the 1980s, but there is at least one important difference between Hawley and his peers. Hawley is only 41-years-old and has repeatedly shown that he is much more ideologically sympatico with us. Your typical U.S. senator is not someone who has thought enough about these issues to name Pelagius. Unlike Gov. Ron DeSantis, it is clear that Hawley has been thinking through these issues since he was a teenager and wrote a book about Theodore Roosevelt and trust busting back in 2008.

FOX News:

EXCLUSIVE – Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., will introduce a bill that would provide $6,000 parent tax credits to single parents and $12,000 parent tax credits for married parents with children under the age of 13.

“Starting a family and raising children should not be a privilege only reserved for the wealthy,” Hawley said in a statement on Monday. “Millions of working people want to start a family and would like to care for their children at home, but current policies do not respect these preferences. American families should be supported, no matter how they choose to care for their kids.”

Hawley’s bill aims to give more freedom to families to decide whether one or both parents should work full-time. The freshman senator’s proposal would give the fully refundable benefit to parents who hit a minimum earnings requirement of $7,540, which translates to 20 hours of work per week at the federal minimum wage. The legislation allows for the same earnings threshold for single and married parents and creates a “marriage bonus.” …”

Okay, I suppose this is at least a step in the right direction.

We should have economic policies which try to reward marriage and stabilize working class families which are under extreme economic stress in this ludicrous Gilded Age economy that the GOP has been steadily constructing since the 1980s. There is a growing consensus on this issue.

Josh Hawley recently introduced the “Bust Up Big Tech Act”:

Sen. Josh Hawley:

“Today, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) introduced the Bust Up Big Tech Act, new legislation to restore accountability and competition to Big Tech. Senator Hawley’s bill would break up Big Tech companies seeking to dominate multiple industries simultaneously, by banning companies like Amazon from marketing their own retail goods alongside those of other sellers or providing online hosting or cloud services to an ever-growing swath of the internet—including competitors. The law would also empower the FTC to monitor compliance and strengthen antitrust enforcement.

The Bust Up Big Tech Act will:

Ban major companies in the business of offering search engines, marketplaces, and exchanges from competing with third-party vendors by selling, advertising, or promoting their own competing goods and services on their sites

Example: Amazon should not be able to own Amazon Marketplace and sell their own Amazon products on their marketplace against other competitors.

Ban major companies in the business of offering search engines, marketplaces, and exchanges from expanding their power and creating anticompetitive conflicts of interest by providing the online hosting and internet infrastructure services for third parties

Example: Amazon cannot continue to operate an overwhelmingly dominant retail business and simultaneously own an enormous share of the cloud computing technology upon which the internet itself is built.

Empower the Federal Trade Commission to hire sufficient staff to monitor compliance

Ensure the antitrust laws are actually enforced, by authorizing state attorneys general and private citizens to bring civil actions to ensure compliance …”

This is another step in the right direction.

We need to be moving away from free market orthodoxy. The problem here isn’t Hawley. It is the fact that so few other Republicans are willing to talk like this and get serious about busting up and regulating these monopolies. Congress is a gerontocracy that is full of old men like Mitch McConnell.

Just the other day, Hawley stood alone in his caucus and was the sole senator who had the balls to vote against the Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Bill in the Senate:

St. Joseph News Press:

“Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, the lone “no” vote when the United States Senate passed an anti-Asian hate bill Thursday by a 94-1 margin, provided a statement on his vote.

“It’s too broad. As a former prosecutor, my view is it’s dangerous to simply give the federal government open-ended authority to define a whole new class of federal hate-crime incidents,” he said.

Hawley also tweeted about the vote and said his problem with the bill is it turning the federal government into the “speech police.” He said it raises big free speech questions. …”

Did anyone notice that Hawley voted against the Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Bill? Is anyone will to give Hawley tremendous credit for that vote and not getting rolled on that issue?

We criticize Republicans all the time here. There is no shortage of things for which they deserve condemnation. We should also praise them though when they occasionally do the right thing and vote the right way to advance our interest. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is whether or not these politicians are advancing our interest and agenda at the level of policy.

Note: I’m going to try to be more balanced in spotlighting the good and the bad. These are three things which I obviously agree with.

  1. I’m for populist economics and family friendly policies.

But a real big problem in America is using the government to solve cultural problems. The Democrats, the “libs” are the worst at this, but the Republicans, the conservatives – being reactionary dupes – just think they can use the government to reverse the left social policies not understanding how they have zero cultural clout. All that does is make Republicans even less popular with people who might vote for them.

If one wanted family friendly policies, the best thing they could do is pour billions into infrastructure – meaning, actual physical construction – which would give working class men jobs that pay well and require physical labor.

Once women see these men with their big muscles and bigger paychecks, they will think to themselves, “well I could ring the register at Walmart for shit pay, or work at the bar getting sexually harassed by obnoxious drunks, or I could just marry Billy and raise babies since he has a good job.”

This actually makes everyone happier and there is no need to “force” anyone to do anything because this is the natural way. Just get out of the way and let nature takes its course.

    • As much as that is slapping protective tariffs on Chinese and other imports to re-generate domestic manufacturing jobs. See, “The Great Betrayal” by Patrick Buchanan.

  2. “Sen. Josh Hawley Is Trying To Win Us Over”

I was already ‘won over’ a long time ago.

To those reading this, who wish to suggest that Hawley cannot be trusted, because he is a Zionist, please spare me : all national politicians, at this point, are required to pose as such. I does not mean diddly squat, other than they want the ADL, and their massive tentacles, off their backs,

Senator Hawley and Governor DeSantis are two capable and consistent politicians who would do this country a lot of good.

Does that mean we ought not secede?

No, but, it does mean that, so long as we have not, suddenly we have two leaders on the national horizon that are better than anything we’ve seen in decades.

  3. I’d rather have Haley because it’ll really hurt you anachronisms to see an Asian-American woman as President, but either way it will still be a pro-Israel candidate who will cut my taxes and your entitlement programs so I love it. Even if a Republican loses in 2024 and 2028, it will be amusing to watch you rubes sobbing as Catholic Biden and then Blasian female Harris win.

    Haley/DeSantis 2024
Support free trade competition and advancing US interests in foreign policy, not America first protectionism and isolationism.
