Joe Manchin: I Will Not Vote To Eliminate Or Weaken The Filibuster

Nothing is going to fundamentally change.

Washington Post:

“When Americans vote to send their two senators to Washington, they trust that they will work to represent the interests of their state on equal footing with 98 other senators. I have always said, “If I can’t go home and explain it, I can’t vote for it.” And I respect that each of my colleagues has the same responsibility to their constituents.

It’s no accident that a state as small as West Virginia has the same number of senators as California or Texas. It goes to the heart of what representative government is all about. The Founding Fathers understood that the challenges facing a rural or small state would always be very different from a more populous state. Designating each state with the same number of senators — regardless of the population — ensured that rural and small states and the Americans who live in them would always have a seat at the table. …

We will not solve our nation’s problems in one Congress if we seek only partisan solutions. Instead of fixating on eliminating the filibuster or shortcutting the legislative process through budget reconciliation, it is time we do our jobs. …”

Joe Manchin is saving us from amnesty, gun control, the Equality Act, the George Floyd Act, HR 1, DC and Puerto Rican statehood, etc.

  1. I honestly think this Manchin dude is doing this deliberately to screw with Biden and his handlers. It’s like the ultimate flex.

    • @Metro…

I think the senator has his finger in the wind and, resultantly, knows which way to play this to remain relatively popular with his constituency.

There are different types of politicians, and Manchin is the kind who wishes to fulfill his office by doing what he thinks his constituency wants.

This is not a bad thing.

    • @John…

“Even If I believed him, he is one man alone.”

Just as a few hundred Spartans could bottle up many tens of thousands of Persians at Thermopylae, one Democrat Dissenter can gum up things in a 50-50 senate.

  2. I first encountered Joe Manchin back in the early 70’s.

Brad I seriously doubt, that Manchin is thinking as deeply as you are about political outcomes. LOL.

Being Italian Joe is very mercurial, and he’s liable to do a 180 at any moment.

    YeahBoy!

      • @November You are just another delusional Roman Catholic, if you think Manchin is acting on anything other than his own personal political interest.

        • @Krusty,

I’m not a Catholic not a Roman Catholic. I was raised Episcopalian. You’re just ridiculous with your broad brush of Catholics.

Have you ever heard of the great Belgian Catholic Leon Degree of the Walloon SS? Guaranteed in his prime, he would best anyone of your heroes that you put in front of him.

      • @Spahn…

The name of Senator Manchin’s paternal side is most probably ‘Manchino,’ but, as many in The South would not, until recent decades, be quick to trust any man whose name ended in a vowel, the Manchino clan did what Jews commonly do and made a semantick tweak.

If you are interested, the Italian name, ‘Manchino’, is pronounced in English thus … ‘Man-keenoh’

  3. Manchin’s also “saving” you from higher taxes on corporations and the rich, which causes you to appear as a Republican in populist clothes. Do comments and donations increase when you cheer for the party out of power? Because ratings typically surge for talk radio show hosts when Dems win.

    • LMAO what?

Joe’s opening bid is to take the corporate tax rate to back to 28% which is halfway to what it was in 2017. Even that isn’t good enough. A 25% corporate tax rate might be on the table. Joe has already ruled out a wealth tax and raising the capital gains tax. Democrats want to eliminate the SALT deduction cap which would benefit millionaires. Joe is keeping the Trump tax cuts and has moved the goal posts so that only households worth over $400,000 are taxed. Jeff Bezos and Amazon support the infrastructure bill because it benefits them. Democrats don’t want to tax the rich or corporations which are their own supporters.

      • It’s all a pantomime. Biden had no ability to rein in the very people that choreographed his election. No willingness to do so either.

  4. The filibuster has been around since the Whigs. I don’t understand why there is talk of doing away with it.

    • @Spahn…

Because The Left always considers doing away with any last thing of the law or custom, when they are in power.

If they have it their way, you would not recognize this country in a few decades.

Come to think of it, I do not already, so much change they have been effective in making.

  5. Though Senator Manchin does not call himself that, he is a Dixiecrat, and, as such, I think he is a good choice for West Virginia.

      • @Krafty…

        I think that is unfair.

Yes, President Biden looks to his own interest, and, yes, he has long, by his own admission, had his hand in the till.

That said, it is clear that he has ideals, and those are the typical New England Yankee concepts of The United States that we were all sold in the mid 20th century.

As a symbol, I think Joe Biden is perfect for the America of recent decades, and, most particularly, American politicians, he corrupt as the day is long, and, even worse, such a bad war criminal if he had been a German bureaucrat in the 1940s, he would have easily received 3 death sentences, if he were tried at Nuremburg.

That said, Joe Biden is our president, who, it is clear to me, is doing what he thinks is best for the country.

That I only agree with him on a few issues, such as taxes and the environment, is the way the cookie crumbles when White Southerners have been so passive for so long that our only defence against Candidate Biden was The Republican Party.

And you see what that got us.

So, for now, President Biden is our president, and I am going to respect that and him, even though it is hard.

    • What do you gents think of Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana? It feels strange referring to someone besides JFK by that name and title.

  6. Now, imagine if Dumpf succeeded and in 2018 replaced Manchin with some pea-brained corporate hack MAGA? This is why I am a Democrat. These are the politicians voting for Democrats gives you. If the (R)etards won, we’d have Mitch McConnell v.2.0 because that is what party Republicans in these poor White border states are like. The Democrats are the lesser of two evils. If you’re a Caucasian American and you are lucky to live in a place where your vote matters, these are the Democrats you get. The AOCs and Katie Porters of the world are restricted to Hispanic and wealthy White districts

    • @Pat…

I appreciate your argument, but, there are a few good Republican senators, as well.

Both parties, as a whole, are wretched, however.
