Made many calls and had meetings at Trump International in Palm Beach, Florida. Why would politicians not want to give people $2000, rather than only $600? It wasn’t their fault, it was China. Give our people the money!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 25, 2020
I simply want to get our great people $2000, rather than the measly $600 that is now in the bill. Also, stop the billions of dollars in “pork”.— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 26, 2020
I will not stand by and watch this travesty of a bill happen without reigning in Big Tech. End Section 230 now, before it is too late. So bad for our Country. Show courage, and do what’s right!!! https://t.co/V99lShpLCe— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 26, 2020
Our $740 defense bill is a gift to China, Russia & Big Tech. It fails to terminate the internationally dangerous Section 230, won’t allow us to bring our troops back home (where they belong), renames & destroys our forts & National Monuments, & makes 5G almost impossible! https://t.co/txJle9Ezlg— Donald J. I’ve given Donald Trump a hard time for years.
From the outset though, I have criticized him for straying from the substance of his nationalist and populist message that got him elected president in the first place in 2016. Now that he is in a spiteful mood and nursing a big chip on his shoulder against Senate Republicans, the old combative Trump seems to have resurfaced in this push for $2,000 stimulus checks.
“Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Friday night after spending part of the day with President Trump that the president is “more determined than ever” to stick by his demand for bigger stimulus payments for Americans than those approved by Congress in a bill passed this week.
Graham’s remarks come as Trump and Congress are locked in a standoff over the size of payments to millions of Americans as part of the latest COVID-19 relief bill, after the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed legislation that Trump has criticized and not signed, putting it in limbo.
“After spending some time with President @realDonaldTrump today, I am convinced he is more determined than ever to increase stimulus payments to $2000 per person and challenge Section 230 big tech liability protection,” Graham tweeted on Friday night. …”
This whole stimulus turnabout just reminds me that if Trump had *governed* like the economic populist he pretended to be, a racist misogynist culturally destructive economic populist, he’d have wiped the floor with Dems in 2020.— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) December 23, 2020
Instead, he governed like an entirely standard, “boondoggles to the rich, fuck the poor” Republican. A racist misogynist culturally destructive pandemic spreading Koch brother.— Elie Mystal (@ElieNYC) December 23, 2020
Given that he has no ideology, we’re really quite lucky he so fucking dumb.
The conventional wisdom is now that Trump lost the 2020 election because he strayed from his message of economic populism. The Democrats are openly relieved that he was successfully coopted by the GOP and campaigned and lost on their unpopular losing platform.
Now that he has nothing to lose, Trump is at least acting on Twitter like the man we elected back in 2016. Imagine where he would be now if he had taken COVID more seriously and campaigned on $2,000 instead of Jared Kushner and the GOP’s messaging. Unlike Senate Republicans, the Democrats in Georgia are campaigning on $2,000 because they aren’t politically stupid.
