UPDATE: Banning assault weapons is also on the table.
NEW: @senatemajldr McConnell on Kentucky radio:— Sheryl Gay Stolberg (@SherylNYT) August 8, 2019
1. Will not bring Senate back.
2. Says background checks, red flag laws and even assault weapons ban will be discussed.
3. Wants to pass legislation.
4. Says Trump is "very much open to this discussion."
I see no reason why either wouldn’t pass the Democratic House.
Blompf has expressed support for signing both and moving on background checks through executive order if necessary. If Mitch McConnell brings this up for a vote in the Senate and there are enough Republicans who support red flag laws, then I don’t see how this will be stopped.
“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that strengthening background checks and red flag laws will “lead the discussion” on addressing gun violence in the wake of two mass shootings that left at least 31 people dead.
McConnell’s remarks on a Kentucky news radio show follow a conversation he had Thursday morning with President Donald Trump, who has called for revisiting stricter background checks for gun buyers as well as red flag laws, which allows authorities to limit a person’s access to guns if they pose an imminent threat to others. …”
Blompf could possibly demand a poison pill on immigration in exchange for his support which the Democrats would never agree to. I don’t see that happening though.
I think he will succeed in pushing this through Congress like the criminal justice reform bill for the Koch Brothers. The media are calling it his Nixon-to-China moment which means that they believe it will be politically harmful for him. Why else would he jump on this hand grenade?
