  1. Most of the pre-1848 immigration into southwestern Pennsylvania and southern Ohio was from Virginia and North Carolina. This was because the National Pike/old Route 40 was the major/only North-South improved highway running form Washington to Wheeling, VA on the Ohio, and beyond. It was also the only west-east link to the lower South. Steamboat up the Mississippi and Ohio to Wheeling then a stagecoach to Washington.
